How Stories Develop

This week my imagination has been very active. Many new fictional friends have presented themselves.

I am often taken by surprise when a new fictional friend presents itself. It happens at the oddest times and places. Where, you ask?

Watching an awards show on television, standing in line at Starbucks, driving home from work…the occurrences have been random.

One of my favorite inspirational moments WAS DUEING A CHAT WITH A CO-worker. She was sharing a night out with her nieces and she made a comment about something her niece said about having sex. Boom! I like to call them “jumps” as my mind jumps to a new plot or character triggered by SOMETHING….there it was. A new sassy character. I don’t know her story yet, but I know she is going to be a challenge to write.

This week the creative juices have been in overdrive. I had the strangest experience in a hotel elevator. As the doors closed Goosebumps slid down my spine. The elevator walls enveloped me, and I felt a sense of trepidation. As the elevator clicked and began its droning ascent, a new character was introduced. For an instant I was her, and I was afraid as the elevator came to a stop, fear rising up to choke me as I waited to see what or who was on the other side of the sliding doors.

Whew! That had to be the closest thing to an out of body experience I have ever encountered, and I’m not a big proponent of that stuff. It’s not even the typical storyline for me, but boy did this female character get through to me. I went straight back to my hotel room (after peeking around both elevator doors before exiting) and frantically wrote out notes for this new a story. It feels different and special somehow. I am excited to see the path it takes.

That’s not the only introduction to new fictional friends this week. I don’t know what’s happened to open the floodgates, but it’s not only exciting but a little overwhelming.

Good things are on the horizon, and i am simmering with anticipation. Hope you stay with me to share in the ride.
